A real jewel in the city's crown, Lyon's fine arts museum is not to be missed. Situated within a former Benedictine abbey, the Musée des Beaux Arts houses a vast collection of paintings, sculptures and antiquities. Known in particular for its collection of sculptures from the 19th and 20th centuries, it is also a popular place for devotees of 20-century artists' work, including that of Picasso and Matisse.

One of Lyon's main tourist attractions for modern art lovers, the Musée d'Art Contemporain is also reputed to house the largest collection of installation art in Europe, if not the world. The museum moved to its current location in the Cité Internationale in 1995. Its vast space includes modern paintings, sculptures, films, photos and videos, as well as regularly changed temporary exhibitions. Visitors to the gallery can take time out in its popular café, which overlooks Lyon's largest park, the Tête d'Or.
